A xanadoc-- our connected document-- is built from a special list--

THE EDIT DECISION LIST (or Xanadoc File)

"Edit Decision List" is a term in the video industry for a list of content to bring in and how to arrange it.

We use the term in the same way: a xanadoc is built from an Edit Decision List, or EDL.  Our EDL, however, works with text (video can come later :)

The xanadoc in your viewer is built from portions of content brought in from elsewhere, and properties applied to that content (xanalinks).  The edit decision list tells your client machine what portions of content to bring in, and how to assemble and connect them.

NO NEW CONTENTS
A xanadoc contains no new text or media elements, since we believe all media elements should be permanized and addressable.
WHAT'S IN THE EDL
An EDL contains two types of element--
• SPANS-- portions of content to bring in (currently only from textfiles on the net)
• XANALINKS-- tables saying what to connect, etc.
Our EDL samples, for our demonstration document--
sample Edit Decision List
• the same sample, with comments
You can see how the spans are listed, followed by the xanalinks.

To see the resulting xanadoc, paste the contents of one of these samples into our xanaviewer1.
